Why Do Dogs and Cats Need Dental Care?

If you go too long without brushing and flossing your teeth, tartar will build up, leading to gum irritation and eventual infection. The same occurs with our dogs and cats—and they are especially prone to dental issues, as they cannot clean their teeth and may not show obvious outward signs of a problem despite their discomfort. Poor oral hygiene has consequences, from gingivitis to possible bone and tooth loss.

Fortunately, these issues can be prevented simply by brushing your pet’s teeth regularly and seeing the vet at least once a year for a checkup and possible teeth cleaning. Our veterinary team can treat existing dental disease, but our ultimate goal is to help you prevent it from ever getting started in your pet!

We Provide Thorough, Expert Dental Services for Pets

Dr. Kier, co-owner of our practice, has extensive training in dental care, including oral surgery. While not a specialist, Dr. Kier has performed numerous extractions for diseased teeth, along with anesthetic blocks and gingival flaps to treat dental disease at the root. These procedures allow our team to go further in treating oral diseases hidden under the gum line and giving our patients a better quality of life.

In addition to our in-depth approach to treating dental disease, we follow several steps to perform our anesthesia teeth cleanings for dogs and cats.

These steps include:

  • Evaluating your pet’s teeth and gums while they are under anesthesia

  • Meticulously scaling the teeth above and below the gum line to remove tartar buildup

  • Removing any broken, loose, and/or diseased teeth to improve your pet’s comfort and remove a source of infection

  • Polishing the teeth to smooth the surfaces and make the teeth more resistant to future buildup

Additional Dental Care Recommendations for Dogs and Cats

Dental care is most effective for dogs and cats when it is proactive. That’s why we recommend routine teeth brushing at home (with pet-friendly toothpaste and toothbrushes), and other methods, such as tartar control diets and dental chews, to supplement your pet’s treatment.

If you have questions about taking your pet’s dental care into your hands or need to schedule a checkup, call (757) 473-8560 or schedule a visit with our team! We would be happy to demonstrate how to brush your pet’s teeth (practice makes perfect) or suggest other means to improve your pet’s oral health—and their quality of life.
